Book Review: The Specialists

The Specialists: The Complete Series

Starting a new reading journey is exciting. It's invigorating. It's challenging.
Why?

Because the book you read takes you to a new place, a new scene with a new character inside of a new plot. The challenge comes with trying to keep up with your new friend and find enough time to read about all of his or her adventures. With a five book series, that isn't easy. However, it is worth it.

So. Very. Worth. It.

Which brings me to my newest binge-reading feat.

I read the whole series by Author Shannon Greenland in a matter of days. All five books were devoured with every single second I had to spare. Each and every book kept me engaged, thinking, wondering, expecting, delighting, and hyperventilating.

It was the best read I've had for a while.

Now, you might ask why that is, and I can refer you to my Goodreads Review. I can share with you what other readers thought about it on Amazon and Goodreads as well. However, I want to tell you a thing or two about this amazing series here and now (feel free to check out the links).

Here are my Top 3 Reasons to LOVE this series:

1. The Main Character: Kelly, aka GiGi (Girl Genius), is relatable. She makes mistakes. She has flaws and insecurities that make her three-dimensional. Her humor, caring attitude, ability to comfort her friends, and her crush on David are all great reasons to cheer her on and invest in her character. Her brilliant knowledge of computers and coding is a unique trait that most literary characters don't possess. Normally, they're slaying dragons or fighting off the "It" crowd. In this sensational twist, GiGi can crack any code and develop her spy-like skills with a lot of sass and gumption. She's a completely loveable character, and I enjoyed getting to know her. In fact, I didn't want her story to end. She was a well-developed, evolving character who I really loved.

2. The Missions: The adventure for every book took me to a new location, and I didn't even have to leave the comfort of my home. The worlds that Shannon Greenland created in all of her books were fabulous. It was delightful to head from one exotic and new setting to the next. However, home base was a comforting place to return to at the end of the day. Their jobs on each mission were distinctive and individual to each character. With every fresh escapade, we learned something new about the characters without compromising the storyline. All the experiences connected directly back to each character's life before they entered the spy world. It's a great way to be introduced to the characters and learn more about them.

3. The Relationships: The personalities of the characters really come out in each book. You get an inside look into their backgrounds, but all of them are distinct and special in their own way. GiGi has the opportunity to learn more about her fellow spies at the same time the audience does. There aren't any surprises that the reader and GiGi don't get to learn together. It's exciting to see their talents revealed as well as what led to their personal abilities, but what's even more wonderful is watching as the friendships bud between GiGi and the other recruits. A little romance spices up the intrigue, and I appreciated that the "love triangle" wasn't your typical annoying go-between. In fact, I found Shannon Greenland made her characters strong, independent, and brave. So, they didn't have to go around in circles with their feelings and emotions. They handled them in a fairly mature way, and I appreciated it.

Overall, this was a FANTASTIC series that merged some of the greatest pieces of perfect-book-making together and gave us a seriously cool read. If you like YA mysteries, spy stories, secret organizations that kick butt, journeys around the world, humorous interactions, romance, and a character's ability to become family with others, then THIS is the series for you!!

Check out all of these great books (might I suggest the whole series?) on Amazon: The Specialists: The Complete Series

If you're hesitant to jump right into the whole series, then might I suggest the individual books as well?

Each can be found on Amazon -- for Kindle ebooks and paperbacks, Barnes and Noble, and Half-Price Books. While there, you can check out Author Shannon Greenland's other books!
